Game 7 - Barnburner!
It was a wild one and in the end Westfield fell to Piedmont Delaware by a score of 12-8. Right from the start this game was destined to be a slugfest. Mike Mondon pitched an impressive first inning, fast balls mixed with an effective change up, holding Delaware to just 2 runs. Westfield roared back in the bottom of the inning on a walk to O'Rourke, a beautiful bunt single by Kurt Kowalski and a double steal for a run. This was followed by back-to-back jacks by Ryan Elliott and Matt Varakian for a 4-2 Westfield lead.
In the top of the second, Mike Mondon's "bring it to 'em" style from the mound was fierce! Delaware battled for a few more runs to take a 5-4 lead. Jon Gribbin came on next and was aided by an unassisted double play by Justin Ricardo on a liner to second. The Blue Devils struck again in the bottom of the inning as Alex Graf and Justin Ricardo singled and Brian Duffy homered for a 7-5 Westfield lead. Gribbin pitched a scoreless top of the third and executed a perfect pickoff play and rundown for the second out. In the bottom of the third Westfield tacked on another run on a single by Gribbin and an RBI single by Ricardo to left.
The rest of the game can be summed up by saying a lot of stuff happened, they scored 7 more times, and won the game 12-8. Lets leave it at that and remember the great time the boys had playing and the great time we had watching them play. What is better than 4 days of baseball, I ask you? Well, the answer is 5 days of baseball because we have a game tomorrow night at Gumpert 1 at 6 PM. No leads, no headfirst slides, no balks, no green wood walls, but it's still baseball and it's great whenever and wherever you play it or watch it.
